Is a childs educational "success" the sum of all the numbers she has memorized?
what good is knowing a ton of facts if you can't think for yourself.
if you can't reason critically.
problem solve.
think outside the box.
be curious.
these "model" schools irritate me so. children need to be encouraged to wonder.Approach the world with confidence and questions not stressed to find the "right" answer. otherwise we will only raise a generation of follwers

really this is just brilliant. its too damn funny
when i first heard obama speak last summer i was hooked. still am.
He may not have the resumee and experience of Hil but let us not underestimate the power of words.
Words can inspire.
Words can have the power to move and mobilize the apathetic or disaffected.
And an inspired people are willing and energized to stand up and do the work of democracy. No matter how capable, qualified , intelligent a leader without magic will not succeed.
Yes the Womens Studies major in me questions if patriarchy has me rooting for the man, and im sure it must partake in some factor in my support(at least for the video), but ultimately he is
fresh.

Checking out san juan I am reminded of what I find to be the visually arresting beauty of worn, chipped porches as they stand in contrast to the antiseptic feel of new construction. the wear and tear as markers of a life transparent. the spirit of new.
When we repainted the apartment last summer i remember feeling struck by the sterility of it all, as if the newly unmarked walls were a thin layer of concealer
i would love to peel away the paint in the corner of a very old home...find the different layers of wallpaper, imagine myself as the infant turned girl turned teen turned lady who had lived under those colors and patterns and soil.
